Simplicity is deceiving. What looks like an obvious design solution isn’t always obvious, especially when working with difficult sloping terrain and large homes on big lots. The basic principles of design rarely let you down, however: Do what looks good but don’t try too hard to force your design solution “on” the land. Follow the lead of the lot: Look at surrounding trees and vegetation, observe the site to form a landscape that it looks comfortable with both house and nature. At this Bethesda home, the addition of terraces in both the front and back of the property attach the home to the ground, providing a broad landscaped base for the home and room for the classically rectangular pool.
